I recently shared on my Facebook page a short story about Cynthia, one of my friends on Facebook, who got married recently and I received so many messages as well as a few comments about how inspiring her story was, so I decided to write this blog post to expound on her story a bit more.
My Red Flags article highlighted a lot of the dangers of online dating and also helped to validate the experiences that some of you went through. However, I could also sense some trepidation and a feeling of hopelessness amongst some of you that perhaps no decent Catholic man exists today.
My intention is that by sharing Cynthia’s inspiring journey from courtship to holy matrimony, some of you who are still waiting on your Joseph will have hope and faith that virtuous and traditional Catholic men still DO EXIST, even if you meet them online!
As traditional Catholics and an older couple, Cynthia and her now-hubby, Joseph, have been open in sharing on social media, their courtship, engagement and wedding process.
Cynthia and Joseph met through Facebook in 2016, when Joseph contacted her and introduced himself. What a gentleman. Note – as a traditional feminine woman, the man should approach you, NEVER the other way around.
After a short period of getting to know each other, Joseph officially started courting Cynthia in summer of 2016.
As Cynthia lived in New York and Joseph in Detroit, their long-distance relationship and courtship was a little tricky as they were not able to see each other very regularly. However, they both made the decision to be chaste throughout their courtship.
Cynthia and Joseph both continued to pray and discern throughout their courtship, and in January of this year 2017, Joseph proposed to Cynthia live on Facebook. We were all utterly thrilled for them as we watched the proposal unfold!!
As traditional catholics, they went a step further and had a betrothal ceremony very shortly after their engagement and in May of this year, 2017, Cynthia and Joseph Burley were joined together in Holy Matrimony in a Traditional Latin Nuptial Mass.
Although Cynthia and Joseph seemingly had a few things going against them, including:
- meeting online – a vast majority of relationships that begin online do not end up in marriage
- Long distance
- Being an older couple
….they were still able to make it work through prayer, discernment and of course, through God bringing them together.
Before Joseph came along, Cynthia had her fair share of weird, odd and downright unsavoury men trying to court her attention, but she had faith, hope, virtue and self-esteem to not allow herself to be swept away by these unsuitable men and to be drawn into something that would have compromised her principles and her value as a child of God.
So, dear single sisters, do not be disheartened. Do not rush into an unholy or sinful relationship, despite seeing many red flags, because you feel that there is no one else out there for you.
You deserve better! You deserve your Joseph!!
