Lent has officially begun and already, the Lenten questions are pouring into my inbox, which prompted me to put together all essentials, resources, key dates and info needed for Lent and Easter on THIS PAGE.
I have also been getting questions on what colour veils to wear during Lent and Easter, so I will address that here.
Lent is a season of penitence and sacrifice, and if you are new to veiling, this is a good time to begin this Biblical tradition, as a powerful witness of Biblical femininity, modesty and humility.
And just as we change our clothing with the seasons, we can also change our veils with the season, witnessing through the veil colours that we choose to wear.
So, here are my recommendations on the veil colours to wear throughout Lent and Easter.
THROUGHOUT LENT:
The liturgical colour for this period is purple, so why not wear a purple veil for Ash Wednesday and for Mass throughout Lent.
You may also choose to wear a black veil when receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday itself, and then a purple veil for other Masses during Lent.
During this period, my preferred veil style is the Infinity style.
LAETARE SUNDAY:
Although the liturgical colour for this day is rose/pink, you can choose to wear either a purple veil as shown above or a white veil as shown below.
PALM SUNDAY:
Palm Sunday is a joyous occasion, so I would switch out to a white mantilla veil.
However, some say that the liturgical colour is red, so you may want to choose a red veil instead.
Either way, just avoid penitential colours of black or purple
MAUNDY THURSDAY
The tone is a bit more sombre than Palm Sunday now, and a white or purple veil seems appropriate at this time. See above for the veils.
GOOD FRIDAY
A red mantilla veil is my preferred choice for this day as the red represents the sacrifice of Christ spilling His Blood for us on this.
However, you can also choose to wear a black veil (see below) instead, as black is a mournful, sombre colour.
HOLY SATURDAY
Our Lord has been crucified and He is in the dead, so a black veil is fitting for this mournful period.
EASTER SUNDAY AND EASTERTIDE:
He is risen!! Halleluyah!
The celebratory colour for Easter Sunday and the rest of Eastertide is gold.
My recommendation would be to go for veils in shades of cream, gold or champagne during this period. Failing any of that, a simple white mantilla veil would do.
I also like to wear veils in these colours throughout Eastertide until the Church returns back to Ordinary Time.
Whatever veil colours you choose to wear at this time, be sure to have a happy and holy Lent/Easter season!

Hi Paige my question is. My Daughters wedding is coming up at the end of June. We are conservative Catholics my issue I’m dealing with is should I wear a Chapel Veil during the Mass for her wedding. I have veiled in church for the last 4 years, even when it’s my Alter Groups turn to clean the church, I veil while I’m cleaning. I veil when I’m doing kitchen duty for funerals. I’m usually always veiled when I’m anywhere at my Parish.. so would it be proper to veil for her wedding mass?

Of course you can veil. stay away from white and stick to gold or silver, which are celebratory colours. And as long as the veil is no longer than shoulder length or covering your face, bridal-style, there is no reason why you can’t veil. I have seen lots of Catholic weddings where all the bridesmaids wore chapel lace mantilla veils. A bridal veil is always different to a chapel, so don’t worry about outshining the bride x

Hi Paige,
Thank you so much for advising different colour veils and when to wear them. I usually just wear a black veil but think I will start wearing coloured veils to match liturgical times.
One question. Do you think it is ok to wear a veil on your way travelling to Church? I always end up fiddling with the veil before I enter the Church and it’s never on right. I would much prefer to clip it in at home before I travel to Church. Please let me know if you think this would be ok. I always wear my Rosary beads to Church. I am proud of my faith.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on veil colors for different seasons. I was wondering if you have an online source for beautiful veils. A quick search shows some things on Etsy and Amazon, but I’d love to support an artisan and get a beautiful piece if I can. Any recommendation is much appreciated! Every blessing, Kat

Hi Paige
I see you have introduced a variety of coloured veils as options to be worn. When I was looking at purchasing a veil for myself, I was under the impression that married women wear black and spinsters wear white (as previously shown when heads of state with their spouses dresses for the Pope). Now I’m not so sure.
Kind regards

Great question, Jeanine.
I believe I have addressed this issue before and the answers can be found in a previous article that I wrote below:

Also, with regards in dressing for an audience with the Pope, there is a traditional dress code for the wives of Heads of States when in audience with the Pope. This dress code, I believe, is sombre attire. This means nothing flashy and so on and I think it also extends to the veil colour worn.
This dress code is VERY different to lay people or women veiling for regular Mass.
Hope this helps.
God bless!
